Earth Hour Phuket Launches ‘Lights Out Phuket’
Earth Hour Phuket Launches ‘Lights Out Phuket’ an initiative to help SAVE THE EARTH.
On March 26th 2011 an anticipated total of more than 1 billion people from 223 countries around the world will switch off all non-essential lights and electronic appliances between 8.30 and 9.30pm local time in support of the fifth annual Earth Hour.
What started as a project between the WWF and The Sydney Morning Herald in 2007 has become a global tradition and the 2011 hour expected to be bigger than ever before as part of an ongoing campaign to raise awareness about climate change.
As a central figure in the Phuket community, 91.5FM – Phuket Island Radio is actively supporting Earth Hour and volunteering to raise awareness of the movement so that everyone in Phuket – Thais, expats and holidaymakers – can join the fight to make a difference by switching off their lights.
More information about Earth Hour Phuket – written in both English and Thai – can be found at the website www.earthhourphuket.com and volunteers can also register their support for ‘Lights Out Phuket’ on the Earth Hour Phuket page on Facebook.
Climate change is of growing concern to everyone, something highlighted by the difficulties facing many around the world right now.
91.5FM hopes that everyone in Phuket on March 26th will join the station in switching their lights off for 60 minutes and contributing to the efforts to reduce our carbon footprint.

91.5FM delivers LIVE outside broadcast.
On Sunday, December 5 91.5FM – Phuket Island Radio pulled of another first in a year of firsts when we broadcasted the inaugural Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship Triathlon live from Laguna Phuket.
A total of 746 competitors from 51 countries lined up at the start of the race at 7am ahead of the 1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21.1km run.
Our coverage of the race started at 9am just before the first athletes completed the bike course and went all the way through until 12.30 after the medal ceremonies for the professional men and women.
Commentary duties were overseen by Whit Raymond, MC for the Ironman 70.3, plus Danny O and DJ Doris.
As race caller, Whit was dealing with the incoming runners and riders so Danny O and Doris kept themselves busy by interviewing gathered spectators and Laguna Phuket staff and also managed to get to talk to several of the athletes who spoke after completing the race.
Among those who found the time to talk to us was men’s champion Tim O’Donnell of the USA, Switzerland’s Caroline Steffan who was crowned women’s champion, Massimo Cigana of Italy and crowd favourite Belinda Granger of Australia.

Garry Holden, at 91.5FM
We had a special guest in the 91.5 studio today as Garry Holden, 2010 Biggest Loser Asia contender paid us a visit to talk about his bid to do both the Laguna Phuket Triathlon and the 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship also at Laguna.
Last time we saw Garry here at 91.5FM he was crossing the finishing line at the end of the Laguna half marathon in June which he did with his wife Jackie and was looking for a new challenge.
There are few bigger challenges on the island than the Laguna Phuket Triathlon – described by many as the ironman of regular triathlons – but Garry decided that alone wasn’t enough and when he found out that Laguna were hosting the inaugural 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship race he wanted to be part of that too, despite both events being only a week apart.
For the half an hour he was in the studio, we spoke about our preparations for the big race and plans for the future.
We also spoke about the relay at the Laguna Phuket Triathlon which still has places available. If you’re a good runner, swimmer or cyclist but found the idea of the full triathlon a bit daunting, why not find two friends and sign up.
Information is available at www.lagunaphukettriathlon.comand registration details are there too. You can also sign up for the 91.5FM 6km Fun Run happening on the same day giving you two chances to be part of what’s sure to be a great day down at Laguna on November 28.

Phuket International Boat Show
Phuket International Boat Show spurs marine growth in Asia
Asia’s wealthy fuel marine industry boom. Phuket is the marine hub of Asia.
Asia’s biggest Boat Show: The Phuket International Boat Show will take place
6-9 January 2011 at Royal Phuket Marina.
29 October 2010, PHUKET – As Asia leads the world out of the global financial crisis, Phuket cements its Asian marine hub status with the hosting of the region’s largest in-water boat display at the 2011 Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX). Now in its eighth year, PIMEX will take place 6-9 January 2011 at the prestigious Royal Phuket Marina and is the place to be in Asia for boating business.
The ranks of Asia’s elite continue to grow and boating is becoming the leisure pursuit of choice: Asians make up 23% of the Forbes Billionaire’s list, up 16% from last year, with 234 of the total 1,011.
Almost all international boat brands and leisure marine products are represented in Asia and as the rate of growth of the Asian marine leisure industry outpaces that in the traditional markets of Europe and the United States, boat builders are positioned to tap the leisure needs of the growing elite and middle classes.
Within Asia, Phuket has positioned itself as the boating hub and PIMEX is the platform that brings together everyone with an interest in the marine lifestyle. Being the “hottest” boating market in the region and with cruising grounds to rival no other, combined with a growing expat population and second home property market, Phuket has become the playground for the region’s wealthy and PIMEX is at the centre.
“PIMEX is the place to come for all things marine. Being based in Phuket, Asia’s marine hub, PIMEX is well positioned to benefit from Asia’s wealthy and rapidly growing middle classes,” said Andy Dowden, Show Director, Informa Yacht Group.
All eyes are on Asia and its growing importance in the leisure marine world, evident in more top international yachting and boating events being hosted in Asia and a plethora of amateur regattas in the region. The recent Asia Superyacht Conference in Singapore welcomed more than 220 participants from 35 countries around the world and highlighted the enormous opportunities in Asia, promoting Asia’s potential leading role in marine industry growth over the next ten years.
In Phuket alone there are three international sailing regattas, the top international boat brands are all represented, and there is a strong local boat building industry. Add to that a developed charter market and a growing number of superyachts that come through each season, and Phuket is the epicentre of nautical tourism in Asia.
“PIMEX attracts qualified visitors and has a track record of strong sales from the show. We have a great line up of exhibitors in the water and in the exhibition hall, including all the top boat brands, marine products and luxury car companies. PIMEX 2011 is set to be the biggest and best yet,” added Dowden.
Boat brokers and dealerships will represent the best-known brands from around the world at the 2011 Phuket International Boat Show, including: Azimut, Bavaria Yachts, Beneteau, Benetti, Boston Whaler, Chris Craft, Crownline, Corsair Marine, Cranchi, De Birs, Fairline, Ferretti Yachts, Fontaine Pajot, Formula, Hanse, Horizon, Jeanneau, Lagoon, Majesty Yachts, Mustang, Nautor’s Swan, Northrop & Johnson, Oryx, Pershing, Princess, Riviera, Sea Ray, Silvercraft, Sunseeker, Windy Boats and more. Locally built boats from Cata Thai, Composite Catamarans, Sunnav and Seat Boat will also be on display.
The 2010 Phuket International Boat Show hosted more than 85 companies and featured 35 yachts in the water, making it the biggest boat show in the region. PIMEX is THE place to do boating business and the 2011 show expects to welcome 6,000 visitors over four days, including over 2,000 trade visitors. The Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX) is now in its eighth year and is organised by Informa Yacht Group.
