Phuket Fashion sets the scene
Phuket Fashion and SKAL do it for the kids
After a weekend of storms and torrential rain the annual SKAL International Phuket and South Thailand fund raiser “Red Passion” looked like it was going to be a wash out as the event organizers and all the helpers and volunteers headed to Zazada Beach Club at Surin Beach, Phuket.
Fortunately the brand new Zazada Beach Club had everything in hand and a weather contingency was in place and after a few requests to the “man upstairs” the rain yielded and the wind died down.
The Phuket Charities
The evening kicked off with a cocktail reception and musical rendition from Eka Liu which was followed by the first of the evenings LIVE auctions with the benefactors being the SKAL Scholarship Fund, Phuket Sunshine Village, Phuket Has Been Good to Us and Phuket International Women’s Club, all supporting the education of Thai Children.
Dinner was served in a organized and well planned manner and a credit to the Zazada team as they catered for over 160 guests, and while they all ate and drank there was a wonderful opera set from the Grand Opera company from Bangkok.
Following dinner and after a few short showers everything moved onto a Phuket Fashion Show supplied by the lovely Katalina and here seven models and all the staff that helped make this an evening to remember deserve a special vote of thanks.
Full Monty Cast of 2012 Appearance.
More LIVE auctions and a tombola fund raising and then the finale of the evening, a guest appearance of the Full Monty Cast from 2012. The video will follow shortly.
Overall an excellent fund raiser, the Phuket Fashion Show a highlight and along with everyone else including the two MC’s from local Phuket radio station 91.5 FM Paul Norris (aka DJ Doris) and Steve Johnston SKAL can be proud to have pulled off such a successful event in the weather situation.
Thank you sponsors
Of course any event like this needs sponsors and The Phuket Gazette and Phuket Island Radio 91.5 FM once again were there promoting the tickets sales well in advance and PG TV capturing the evening along with a host of other sponsors from B B&B, Chalong Bay Rum, W Cafe, Choice Foods, Swissotel, Gourmet One and Katalina Collection.
Well done SKAL a fantastic initative to share fund raising amongst four local charities and a credit to everyone that was involved.

Ironman Champions
Ironman Champions
KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii , Oct. 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — New Ironman champions were crowned as Pete Jacobs (AUS) and Leanda Cave (GBR) overtook a challenging, world-class field under difficult conditions at the 2012 IRONMAN World Championship presented by myList. Jacobs, who finished second at last year’s race, captured his first IRONMAN World Championship title. Finishing in 8:18:37, the Australian ran his way to the title after beginning the marathon more than seven minutes behind Marino Vanhoenacker , who led off the bike. An Australian has claimed the men’s title at the last six consecutive IRONMAN World Championship races. Cave had a solid race from start to finish and overcame surges by multiple competitors throughout the run to secure her first IRONMAN World Championship title, crossing the line in 9:15:54.
Jacobs excelled over an impressive men’s field that included last year’s third place finisher Andreas Raelert (DEU), Frederik Van Lierde (BEL) and last year’s champion Craig Alexander (AUS). Andy Potts (USA ) exited the water first for the second year in a row, but Vanhoenacker (BEL), Sebastian Kienle (DEU) and Jacobs established themselves through the lava fields of the bike course with the Belgian and German ultimately pulling away just before the turn-around in Hawi . Kienle got a flat tire, leaving Vanhoenacker to lead the way into T2 with the lead. He held his position for almost 16 miles of the run until Jacobs, who posted last year’s fastest run-split, made the pass to take the lead. The rest of the race was a dash to the finish as the Aussie secured the title in convincing fashion.
“It still hasn’t sunk in, it’s all a bit surreal how it happened,” Jacobs said after the race. “I was confident heading into the race that I could do it, and I just still can’t believe it finally happened.”

Phuket Raceweek Final day
22 July 2012 (PHUKET)
The best was saved for last as the final day of the 2012 Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek saw 10-12 knots of breeze gusting to 15, and some spectacular competition around the southern islands of Phuket, which brought to an end an exciting and successful week.
Two races – a windward/leeward and an islands course – for all except the Classics was the decision by Race Officer Simon James for the Cape Panwa Hotel Race Day, and the fresh breeze delivered some great sailing, and surprises to the results table.
IRC Racing.
Jing Jing (Rick Pointon) went into the last day with a clear lead in IRC Racing I and IRC Overall classes, and looked unlikely to give it up. In the stronger winds, the all-new Aquila Reichel Pugh 45 Katsu (Ben Copley) performed well and put in solid last day performance scoring two firsts, pulling them up the leader-board into second overall in IRC Racing I. Despite a 2,3 on the day Jing Jing won both IRC Racing I and IRC Overall comfortably. Wan Marang (Kevin Whitcraft) finished third overall in IRC Racing I.
Sportsboats.
In the Sportsboats class, racing went down to the wire, the winner being decided on the final race. A first in Race 1 left the Phuket 8 Surf Patrol (Ray Waldron) in a strong position, however, on the longer course Race 2 they were beaten by the Welbourn 25 Brace! Brace!! Brace!!! (Paul Murphy), with its Dynamic Stability System. But that was not enough to knock them off the top spot and Surf Patrol won the series by two points with Brace! Brace!! Brace!!! in second and Longitude (Rolf Heemskerk) third.
Skandia Endeavour of Whitby (Stuart Williamson) and Phoenix (Niels Degenkolw) started the day tied on points with all to play for in IRC Racing II. However, surprises were yet to come. Skandia Endeavour of Whitby won the first race but placed fifth in the last race, letting Ruby Tuesday (John Vause) in with two second places today, enough to take the title by a single point. Phoenix were third overall.
Two points separated the top three in IRC Cruising going into the last two races today and all was set for a climatic encounter. A collision at the pin-end of the startline between Jenzminc VI (Andy Brennan) and Dreamtime (Rob Azzopardi) added to the intensity. Sail in Asia (Mike Downard) won line honours and the win on corrected time in Race 1, and held on to beat Remington (Jim Ellis) buy one minute on corrected time in Race 2 to win the series by two points. Remington were second overall and Dreamtime third.
In the Firefly One-Design class Voodoo (Hans Rahmann) had already wrapped up the title yesterday with a masterclass of multihull sailing. They went on to score another first today to underscore their superiority. Moto Inzi (Roger Kingdon) scored a 4,1 to finish second overall with Twin Sharks (John Newnham) in third.
Multihull.
The Andaman Cabriolet catamaran DaVinci (Mark Pescott) had already won the Multihull Racing title yesterday with an unbeatable run of first places, and today continued their impressive form with two more wins, making it eight from eight. Add to that five from five at the Phuket Multihull Regatta one week ago and DaVinci are 13 races undefeated. The other Andaman Cabriolet design, Nina (Rob Cullen), finished second overall ahead of Sweet Chariot (Henry Kaye), who enjoyed today’s stronger winds, in third.
In the Classic class, the top two were tied on points and all could be lost (or gained) on the final race. McBob The Boat (Joe Gruba) threw away their chance by finishing fourth, leaving the door open for Sirius (Simon Morris) who won today and topped the series with 4 points.
34 entries and over 500 participants from around the world took part in the 2012 Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek. Final prizes were presented by at a lavish beachside party at the Cape Panwa Hotel.
